Glass Inlaid Marble (GIM) was originated by Ben Galloway for Artifex London
in November 2000. Panels of marble, usually 20mm thick, are waterjet cut to
any design and inlaid with a Venetian glass compound. The areas of glass inlay
are translucent and consequently can be back-lit to stunning effect. After
a nearly a year's product development, GIM was first seen with the opening
of the Eclipse Bar, in London in October 2001.
For Eclipse, Artifex London created five GIM panels containing abstract designs
by contemporary artist, Alan Halliday. The combination of brown travertine
marble and amber glass, lit from behind is magical and sophisticated. The marble
surfaces have been honed by hand and antiqued to produce beautiful textures.
At night, as the lighting through the glass becomes apparent, the panels come
into their own, filling the Eclipse environment with the soothing, rich glow
of translucent coloured glass. Artifex London specialises in tendering for
bar, restaurant & hotel projects, designing illuminated bar tops & fronts,
wall panels, underlit flooring and signage, and in 2006 completed a new series
of panels for the InterContinental Hotel, Park Lane, London. To order a brochure,
